How Environmental Nonprofits can increase participation

There has been a big push in being green in the last 20-30 years and one of the best ways that a person can do this is by involving themselves in an environmental nonprofit. Environmental nonprofits are based around volunteers getting active and working through the nonprofit to make a difference and dedicate time to the improvement of the environment. The photo to the left was taken from a place that I went to by being involved in an environmental nonprofit. Many of these organizations will involve you being out in nature and spending time in the natural world. Motivating volunteers for these nonprofit is difficult because the organization must find a balance. Their message cannot be so strong that it deters people to participate but it must also not be too weak where people do not see the importance.

Since nonprofits are based on volunteer work, they need to be able to recruit people to come and work for them. People need to want to donate time to a good cause that they can be passionate about. Researchers describe that in most cases, people are most motivated to volunteer for personal reasons. They also found that it is more common for young people to motivate for personal reasons and older folks wanting to volunteer with the idea of helping others. For both generations there are a few main motivational reasons. This can include, wanting to do it to be a part of a group and feel needed, the desire to help others for selfless reasons and the desire to make connections in the community and further a professional career. Another factor that must be considered is loyalty to the organization. It is important that the nonprofit utilize volunteers in a way, that they can visualize the difference they are making and by doing so, it can increase loyalty and make sure the volunteer returns. Research shows, that returning volunteers have an increased level of motivation and support for the organization which is vital for the survival of a nonprofit.

Tom Kuntz, a fire chief for a nonprofit organization described that the best way to get people to volunteer is by having a mission statement that sparked passion and motivation. He had found that people were more motivated to work when the organization supported something that they found inspiring. Another factor that he stressed was that it is important that the organization never turn anyone away and that they find a place for everyone as long as they are willing to work.

Environmental nonprofits are the driving factor in helping the environment improve and make nature more accessible to everyone for years to come. By supporting these organizations, people have the opportunity to make a in a local community that can spread to the world.

    1. I also am really interested in the motivation for volunteers and motivation within an organization. With your research, you seemed to open a can of worms, so to speak. I wish there was a deeper connection to the environment within your article in order to tie better with the title.

In addition, for the sake of a blog post, I would recommend using a bulleted list for the second paragraph. I got a little lost in the restatement of motivations, and I believe it could be better structured!

      Overall, very well written!

  2. Communication to motivate individuals to volunteer is an interesting topic. It would be interesting to see if nature reserves take advantage of social media to attract volunteers.

  3. How do you think non-profits can better harness the general concern for the environment and make volunteering more accessible for more people? How do you feel non profit organizations can better find a balance of strength in their message? Do you think there is a general model for non-profit organization messaging that could be found?

  4. I love this topic but it does make me sad that it is so hard to find volunteers, which is understandable but very sad because they are so needed. I think what needs to be done is have experiences like your own put out on social media so other people can hear a personal story and different tactics like that. What do you think is the best way to reach out to people?

The Secret to a Successful Employee Wellness Program

You’re walking down the hallway toward your office and you see a poster from your company challenging you to make a New Year’s resolution to get in 10,000 steps per day for a fitter you. Does this sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone. Employers all over the United States offer Employee Wellness Programs. However, participation remains low even as the prevalence of chronic diseases, like heart disease, are increasing. 6 in 10 adults in the U.S. have a chronic disease and 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have two or more chronic diseases . So, why does participation remain low in wellness programs if these troubling statistics keep rising?      Well, there are a few barriers that organizations seem to constantly run in to and often are unable to move past. 1.      Inconvenient locations - Do you have to go to another location for classes on wellness or to workout?   2.      Time constraints - A...

There is More to Treatment than Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is a dark mistress that does not care about age, race, gender or religion, digging her claws deep into anyone willing to give her a passing wink. The devastation of addiction has cast a heavy shadow over America, affecting 19.7 million people and costing society 740 billion dollars in lost productivity, crime, and healthcare annually. When glancing at substance abuse statistics   you may think “ what is this new plague, or infectious disease” that can claim 1 out of 7 people . The vicious demons of addiction infiltrate workplaces, communities and relationships, robbing individuals of their family, health, sanity, and soul. The depth of this issue is illustrated to the right, showing a steady increase in drug overdose deaths from 16,849 in 1999 to 70,237 in 2017.   The issue is clear, but where do we go from here? If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse, consider seeking help from one of the 14,000+ treatment facilities in the United Stat...

College is Stressful! Orientation is Stressful! Why Don't We Adapt?

Did you ever feel this way while going through college orientation? Believe me, you are not alone. Often times, as we join a new organization, we are filled with copious amounts of stress and anxiety. There is so much we don't know! What is our role here? Where we do belong? DO we even belong?! Most of these questions related directly to the communication theory of uncertainty reduction, or uncertainty management. The basis of uncertainty management theory (UMT) is simple: what are the things we do in order to not feel stressed; what actions can we take to help transition into a new organization? UMT can be broken down into a simple three categories: relational, role, and organizational uncertainties. Relational uncertainties are the anxiety about the relationships you form. Role uncertainties are the anxiety and stress about your actual job. What are you actually supposed to be doing? Organizational uncertainties are the general misconceptions and confusion about the org...
